Dear Friends and Family,
I will be participating in the Chicago Marathon on October 13, 2019 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures in memory of my maternal grandma, Sarah Cangemi.
My grandma Sarah passed away from multiple myeloma when I was five years old. I am lucky to have some memories of my grandma Sarah. Even more than specific memories, I have a feeling of her. Her love, her warmth, and her kindness. She was a lot like my mom - she was glamorous, always smiling, and loved her family fiercely. I wish I had more time with her but am grateful I had the chance to know her. I hope you have a chance to take a look at some of the photographs I have uploaded of her, including photos of her and my grandpa Gene. They looked like models! My profile picture is one of my favorites with her. It shows my mom, grandma, and my sister with me in my grandma's arms. It was taken at my grandparents' house in Gage Park, Chicago. I loved going to their house.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell. Because cancer cells don't mature and then die as normal cells do, they accumulate, eventually overwhelming the production of healthy cells. In the bone marrow, myeloma cells crowd out healthy white blood cells and red blood cells, leading to fatigue and an inability to fight infections. Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, though much progress has been made, myeloma still has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers.
I am asking my friends and family to support my participation in my FIRST marathon, the Chicago Marathon, to benefit the MMRF. The work ahead of me? Race 26.2 miles and raise at least $1,250 for the MMRF. Training for this event is a big challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up!
The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past twelve years in a row.
Please take this opportunity to give back and support this game-changing cancer organization.
Thank you so much for your support!!
