This beautiful couple are my in-laws, Jim and Kay Westrick, as we celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary!
Kay was diagnosed with multiple myeloma almost 15 years ago and has been bravely living with the disease ever since. Gratefully, Kay is still symptom free. She is fortunate that her doctors are not treating her myeloma, as the treatment is worse than the disease, so far. She is one of the very lucky few.
Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer. Over 30,000 people are diagnosed yearly with multiple myeloma and an estimated 12,000 are predicted to die each year from the disease. Though much progress has been made, myeloma still has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers.
I will be participating in the 2019 Chicago Marathon on October 13, 2019 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures. This is my second marathon with Team For Cures. The money raised with your help provides incredible research and hope to those battling this terrible disease; those who aren't as lucky as Kay. My hope is to have the full benefit of that research available should my family ever need it!
I'm proud to be part of the ACTION that is helping fund and fuel this important research: Thanks to the important work of the MMRF and its partners, the FDA has approved ELEVEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. There are more treatment options in the pipeline. This is so important because myeloma is a cunning disease which morphs through treatment, meaning patients often need new treatment options when they relapse.
The work ahead of me? Well, it's minor compared to those living with and fighting multiple myeloma. I will train and run 26.2 miles. I had committed to raising at least $1,250 for the MMRF. However, with your help, I've exceeded that goal and have since raised my goal... four times! It is now $3500. While this a big challenge, I know that with your support, together, we can raise funds for a great cause and continue to find new treatments for patients with multiple myeloma.
The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. Nearly 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for 16 years.
The Goal: Raise $3500 for the MMRF!
Please support my participation in the Chicago Marathon benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise $3500, and I need your help to get there. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up! Please take this opportunity to give back and support this game-changing cancer organization.
With love and gratitude,
