Thank you for making your way here to our page! To give you some perspective in what this fundraising event means to us, Mandy did a little math. For 6 hours a week, over 22 weeks, we will be training for the 2019 Chicago Marathon. But this battle of sweat and spandex is nothing compared to the 600+ hours Matt has spent fighting Multiple Myeloma over the last three years. Matt has spent an average of 5 hours each week since August 16, 2016 receiving chemotherapy, managing a constant roster of medications, harvesting stem cells, or meeting with his amazing team at University of Chicago under the leadership of his primary oncologist, Dr. J.
And while we're certain he'd like to spend those weekly hours doing just about anything else, we are all deeply grateful for the treatment he's been able to receive. To show our continued support for Matt and our deep gratitude for an organization that has made great strides in advancing his care and the care of so many others, we will be raising funds and running with the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation Team for Cures.
Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer. Over 30,000 people are diagnosed yearly with multiple myeloma and an estimated 12,000 are predicted to die each year from the disease.
We are humbled and proud to be part of the action that is helping fund and fuel important research: Thanks to the important work of the MMRF and partners, the FDA has approved TEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. This means more, better treatment to more patients more quickly.
We know the direct implications of this research well. The MMRF has funded many of Dr. J's clinical trials at the University of Chicago. It makes the product of these dollars real and immediate. Matt's weekly regimen was recently changed because of the positive results his doctors found from a clinical trial, funded by the MMRF.
And if we haven't convinced you yet, you can rest assured your money is spent in all the right places. The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. Nearly 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for 16 years.
And now we get to the ask.
Our Goal: Each of us raise $1,750 for the MMRF! (For a grand total of $3500 raised together.)
Science advances when we invest in it. We're asking you to support our participation in the Chicago Marathon benefiting the MMRF. We have made a steep fundraising commitment, and we need your help to get there. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up!
While any kind of support is gladly welcomed, donating to this cause will hopefully, one day, lead to a cure!
