I'm Not Stopping... Until There is a Cure!

Chuck Wakefield

Chuck Wakefield

Dear Friends and Family,

I am a multiple myeloma patient. I am one of the lucky ones: 15 years ago, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and underwent a stem cell transplant. I was supposed to live 5 years. And here I am, ten years beyond the expected life span. I am very fortunate to be able to live fully and participate in cycling and hiking events to raise funds. I continue to do this to help other myeloma patients who are not as fortunate as I am and to help fund critical research that is going to help all myeloma patients.

I have been supporting the MMRF since 2016, when I was part of the inaugural Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma team who climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest free standing mountain in the world.

In 2017, I rode 3700 miles across the country with a group of six cyclists as part of the inaugural Road to Victories Team. Last year I rode from London to Paris, 300 miles over 3 days. This year, in September, I will be participating in a 5 day ride from Vermont to Quebec as part of a 30 person team which includes patients, doctors, caregivers and other, all with a direct connection to multiple myeloma.

Climbing mountains and riding bikes won't cure cancer... but research will. And research takes money. We've raised over $2 million with the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma Program so far, and our Road to Victories series has raised $650,000 so far, and has a goal of reaching $1 million with our 2019 ride. 100% of all funds raised by the R2V Program go directly to myeloma research thanks to our generous sponsor, Janssen, who provides a grant that allows the MMRF to underwrite the costs of the ride.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, though much progress has been made, myeloma still has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers.

I'm proud to be part of the ACTION that is helping fund and fuel important research: Thanks to the important work of the MMRF and our partners, the FDA has approved TEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. And there are 3-4 more treatment options coming to patients in 2019 and 2020.

This is so important because there are 12 different types of multiple myeloma, and because myeloma is a cunning disease which morphs through treatment, meaning patients often need new treatment options when they relapse.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world and is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past twelve years in a row.

Please support my participation in the Road To Victories Ride benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise at least $5,000 and I will need your help to get there. More importantly, patients need these funds to extend their lives while we get closer and closer to a cure.

Your tax deductible donation goes directly to help fast track lifesaving treatments for myeloma patients. Please donate whatever you can to support this great effort! It all adds up!
