Dear Friends and Family,

I will be participating in the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma (MM4MM) program in September 2020 by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds and awareness for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). To date MM4MM has raised over $2 million with patients, caregivers, family members, doctors, clinicians and others taking on epic challenges and reaching out to their circle of support. 100% of those funds go to the MMRF, thanks to our sponsors.

My drive to do this is the wonderful opportunity to blend two things that I absolutely love in life: hiking mountains and helping cancer patients. I have been directly involved in cancer care for the past 16 years, fortunate to be part of one of the nation’s largest oncology provider network – The US ONCOLOGY Network, working for Texas Oncology in Paris, Texas. Texas Oncology administer about half of all cancer care in Texas, with 175 locations and more than 420 physicians. Also I was one of the founder and leaded for 3 years a cancer support group "Together we CAN make the difference" that gave me an even closer understanding of what our patients are going through.

I am dedicating this challenge to my special friend Cindy Martin that currently is going through MM. I had the privilege to be in touch with her feelings, fears, and her tremendous will power to fight this cancer and continue to live her life. I also dedicate this hike to all of my cancer patients as a tribute to their inspirational stories that will be my main fuel to climb this mountain!

For me, climbing a mountain has so many similarities as the challenges of going through cancer. You can find yourself at the bottom of a mountain, wondering if you ever going to make it to the top, doubting that you might not have enough energy to do it or thinking fearfully of a long list of bad things that might happen. But once on the top of that mountain, a deep feeling of accomplishment will take over you mixed with the powerful feeling of I DID IT! and a complete confidence that you can conquer anything in life. Somehow, I wish all these ‘top of the mountain’ feelings and positive energy to be sent to Cindy and all my cancer patients that struggle in their battle with cancer.
I will be hiking with some of the most incredible people all with a direct connection to multiple myeloma. Our team was specifically selected to raise research funds and who won't stop until there is a cure. We'll be trekking through the various ecosystems of Mount Kilimanjaro to reach the summit at over 19,000 feet.

I have pledged to raise at least $10,000 for the MMRF. Training for this event is a big challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer. Over 30,000 people are diagnosed yearly with multiple myeloma and an estimated 12,000 are predicted to die each year from the disease. I'm proud to be part of the ACTION that is helping fund and fuel important research: Thanks to the important work of the MMRF and our partners, the FDA has approved ELEVEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. There are more treatment options in the pipeline. This is so important because myeloma is a cunning disease which morphs through treatment, meaning patients often need new treatment options when they relapse.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. Nearly 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for 16 years.

Please support my participation in the Mount Kilimanjaro Trek benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise at least $10,000 and I will need your help to get there. More importantly, patients need these funds to extend their lives while we get closer and closer to a cure. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up!

Thanks! Dana
