A tribute to Eileen Marie Coogan also known as Nana

Caroline Hess

Caroline Hess

Dear Family and Friends,

On March 16, 2019 one of the strongest women we knew and loved passed away surrounded by her husband of 52 years, Bob, her 3 children, Bernadette, Brendan and Colin and their spouses, and her 10 grandchildren- Caroline, Rory, Whitney, Brody, Henry, Gus, Reese, Tully, Mack, and Poppy.

The morning after Nana passed, I ran the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 17, 2019 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures in Nana's honor. Thirteen years ago, Nana was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Nana was our cheerleader, our cookie-maker, and our ultimate comforter. The last time I saw my Nana in the hospital I had the opportunity to tell her that her strength is what keeps me going. I knew that Nana was going to be there cheering me on.

One of Nana's friends shared something that resonates with all of us: "But mostly I remember how much she loved others- it was that that stood out for me, a kind of warm radiance coupled with a humorous twinkle that made people relax and open up. I will miss her a lot."

Nana lived her life to the fullest. Multiple Myeloma was something she dealt with but her focus never shifted from her family and her active lifestyle. When asked about her treatment, she would change the subject and turn the focus to one of the upcoming family gatherings or sporting events.

We learned through Nana's journey that myeloma is a cunning disease which morphs through treatment, meaning patients often need new treatment options when they relapse. We are thankful to MMRF for their work finding new drugs and treatment. As Nana said, "We know there is a cure where there is love." So much love.

With Love and Thanks for your support,
