Dear Friends and Family,

I will be participating in the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma program in June 2019 by climbing Mount Washington to raise funds and awareness for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures.

To date MM4MM has raised over $2 million with patients, caregivers, family members, doctors, clinicians and others taking on epic challenges and reaching out to their circle of support. 100% of those funds go to the MMRF, thanks to our sponsors, Amgen and Celgene.

The work ahead of me? Climb 6,288 feet above sea level to the highest peak east of the Mississippi and raise at least $2,500 for the MMRF. Training for this event is a big challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, though much progress has been made, myeloma still has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers.

I'm proud to be part of the ACTION that is helping fund and fuel important research: Thanks to the important work of the MMRF and our partners, the FDA has approved TEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. And there are 2-3 more treatment options right around the corner.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past twelve years in a row.

My drive to do this is the wonderful opportunity to blend two things that I absolutely love in life: hiking mountains and helping cancer patients. I have been directly involved in cancer care for the past 16 years, fortunate to be part of one of the nation’s largest oncology provider network – The US ONCOLOGY Network, working for Texas Oncology in Paris, Texas. Texas Oncology administer about half of all cancer care in Texas, with 175 locations and more than 420 physicians. I am also one of the founders of Together we CAN make a difference cancer support group, which allowed me to know my cancer patients to a much deeper level. Recently, my special friend Cindy Martin is actively going through MM and I had the privilege to be in touch with her feelings, fears, and her tremendous will power to fight this cancer and continue to live her life.

Climbing a mountain has so many similarities as the challenge of going through cancer. You can find yourself at the bottom of a mountain, wondering if you ever going to make it to the top, doubting that you might not have enough energy to do it or thinking fearfully of a long list of bad things that might happen. But once on the top of that mountain, a deep feeling of accomplishment will take over you mixed with the powerful feeling of I DID IT! and a complete confidence that you can conquer anything in life. Somehow, I wish all these ‘top of the mountain’ feelings and positive energy to be sent to Cindy and all my cancer patients that struggle in their battle with cancer.

Please support my participation in the Mt. Washington Peak Weekend benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise at least $2,500 and I will need your help to get there. More importantly, patients need these funds to extend their lives while we get closer and closer to a cure.

Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up!
