Dear Friends,

I will be participating in the Journey Endurance Run/Relay on October 5, 2019 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures.

My amazing father, Alex Giacin, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in late 2012. He endured a stem cell transplant, multiple rounds of chemo and radiation, and more blood transfusions than I can count. Just like everything else in his life, he faced it courageously and head on.

He was a man who wore many hats - husband, father, son, brother, Papa, a woodworker, writer, singer, and actor. My dad was my rock. He was strong, wise, humble, and also occasionally goofy telling some of the worst/best dad jokes ever.

On July 31st, 2016, my dad passed away after living close to four years with his devastating diagnosis. The hole left in my heart from his absence is astounding and I try to keep it filled in any way I can. One such way is through running. My dad inspired me to challenge myself when I was younger by running with me and the lessons that came along with it stay with me constantly. After he passed, I used running as a means to cope with his death and to hold his life lessons even closer.

When I found out about The Journey, it only made sense that I should participate in a run to support patients like my dad by doing something we loved to do together! I’m combining this challenge to run around Randall’s Island with my training for the NYC Marathon and will complete my 20-mile training run in honor of my dad.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, sadly, has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers. But while there is no cure, great progress is being made. In fact, thanks to the important work of the MMRF, the world's leading private funder of myeloma research, the FDA has approved ELEVEN new treatments in the time that it usually takes for ONE new drug to come to market. These drugs have almost tripled the lifespan of myeloma patients. And now the MMRF is funding over 20 additional treatments in various stages of development, giving hope to tens of thousands of patients and their families.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. And the MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past eleven years in a row. Please support my participation in the Journey Endurance Run/Relay benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise at least $500, and I need your help to get there. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up! Please take this opportunity to give back and support this game-changing cancer organization.

Thanks! Kayla
