Team Tara

Dear Family and Friends,
Running is a journey, a process, an adventure and so much more. As most of you know, we (Kendra, Bonnie and Jay) love to run and have participated in many races over the years from fun runs to ultramarathons. This year, we’ve decided to run the 26.2 mile Detroit Free Press Marathon on October 21, 2018 to honor a special person in our life, Tara Sumner. Tara was a healthy 45 year old who stayed active and enjoyed athletic pursuits. This changed in June this year when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma which is a type of blood cancer that affects the plasma cells and is typically found in older patients. This diagnosis for Tara puts her in a rare class of the 1% of the 1% of patients her age with this blood cancer type. Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer and although it is considered incurable, it is a treatable disease thanks to recent advancements in cancer research.

For this race, we will be partnering with the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to bring awareness and financial support to accelerate the development of treatments to extend patient’s lives. In the last 10 years, the MMRF has been able to receive FDA approval for 10 multiple myeloma drugs (including 4 in the last 18 months) which is the time it normally takes for one to be approved.

So, we are asking for your help. No, you don’t have to run a marathon with us but if you are feeling inspired, we’d love for you to join our team. First, please pray for Tara. We’ve seen many answers to prayer already and she is currently doing well with her outpatient chemotherapy treatments. The next big medical hurdle will be overcoming a stem cell transplant that will probably happen around November of this year at Karmanos Cancer Institute. This will be a grueling and overwhelming process as a 3-week hospitalization stay is required with several months of recovery at home post- transplant. Not fun.

If you would like to partner with us financially, you can go to our link online at endurance.themmrf.org/2018YOR/teamtara and click “DONATE”. Our team fundraising goal is now $10000 up from $5000 and no gift is insignificant. The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and development. The MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past eleven years in a row.

Thanks in advance for your support! We appreciate it so much. If you have questions, we would love to talk to you, text/call Kendra, Bonnie or Jay.

Sincerely,

Kendra Gosk
