Running for Mom

Matthew Bernstein

Matthew Bernstein

Dear Family & Friends,

Earlier this year, I was given some unexpected news. My mother, Barbara, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

In the weeks and months that have passed since I was given this news, one thing has struck me more than anything else: my mom's optimism. Despite being the person most impacted by this diagnosis, she has refused to let it get in her way. Although she faces tough treatment that will last for months and years, she remains focused on a positive outlook.

Perhaps more impressive than her attitude is her drive to stay involved with the things she finds important. Although travel and more difficult activities have been put on hold, she still checks up on how I'm doing and what is happening with the people who are important in her life.

Staying in touch with my mom is a good first step during a difficult time. But I also endeavor to make a more lasting impact on the world through this experience. I have decided to run the NYC marathon to raise money for Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. While my goal is to raise $10,000, I'm hoping I can exceed that number.

If you are able to donate to this cause I, along with many others, will be truly grateful for your help.

Sincerely, Matt

Additional Information

I will be participating in the TCS NYC Marathon on November 4, 2018 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures.

The work ahead of me? Race 26.2 miles and raise at least $3,000 for the MMRF. Training for this event is a big challenge, but nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients with multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and, sadly, has one of the lowest five-year relative survival rates of all cancers. But while there is no cure, great progress is being made.

In fact, thanks to the important work of the MMRF, the world's leading private funder of myeloma research, the FDA has approved TEN new treatments, including FOUR in just the past 18 months – a track record that's unparalleled in the world of oncology. These drugs have almost tripled the lifespan of myeloma patients. And now the MMRF is funding over 20 additional treatments in various stages of development, giving hope to tens of thousands of patients and their families.

The Goal: Raise $3,000 for the MMRF!

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. And the MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past eleven years in a row.

Please support my participation in the TCS NYC Marathon benefiting the MMRF. I have made a commitment to raise at least $3,000, and I need your help to get there. Please contribute whatever you can. It all adds up!

Please take this opportunity to give back and support this game-changing cancer organization.
