Dear Friends and Family,

I will be participating in IRONMAN Lake Placid on July 22nd, 2018 as part of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) Team For Cures. For those of you that know me, this is not the first Ironman I’ve raced, but it is the first time I’m racing Ironman for something other than my own personal ambition…I’m racing for my MOM.

May 25th, 2012 was one of the most difficult days of my life, and that of my family’s; the day of my Mom’s diagnosis with cancer. At the time we did not know what kind, where it came from, when it started, or how much time we had. However, fortunately for my Mom, in an inspiring kind of way, she’d found comfort in the fact that she’d finally uncovered the source of her back pain that had plagued her for months, and felt ready to do whatever necessary to deal with the cancer.

Under the care of some fantastic physicians, my Mom immediately began treatment to eradicate the disease in her body, and come up with a plan for addressing the compromised vertebrae in her back that a tumor had nearly dissolved. She was ready for the fight, but had no idea how much she’d be tested.

2012 was supposed to be a fun year. My wife was training for her first Ironman, and I was training to race Lake Placid for the first time, but one of our biggest supporters was in the fight for her life. It was a time for family bonding, inspiration, and encouragement to keep living out our lives. We’d all get through this together, and that we have…

I say all this because 2018 is a very special year. 2018 marks the 6th year since my Mom’s diagnosis, the 5th year since her transplant, and her 2nd trip to Lake Placid! For anyone with Multiple Myeloma and having had a transplant, the 5th year without the disease returning, or NED (No Evidence of the Disease) as we like to call it, is a huge milestone, and is telling about the success of the treatment. …and yes, you read that right, this will be my Mom’s 2nd trip to Lake Placid. She was there with a busted, tumor eaten back, cheering me all along the course in 2012, AND she made it to Wisconsin to cheer on my wife with her family after the back surgery later that Summer! I told you it was an inspirational year.

I credit my sister for raising my awareness to this great foundation and the opportunity to race Lake Placid with them. I’d said 6 years ago that someday I would race with MMRF in support of my Mom and so many others fighting this disease. That day has finally arrived, and it comes at a time that means so much to us all.

Yeah, I’ve got a long road ahead. I’ve got $5,000 to raise, and 140.6 miles to swim, bike, and run in one of the toughest, most beautiful courses around, but my Mom’s got it tougher! So when you think of donating, don’t think of me, but think of her, and others going through the same situation. They are the tough ones…they are the true Ironmen and women in our lives, and through them we should find strength in our own personal journeys.

I thank you for reading our story, and considering making a donation. Remember, every amount, however large or small, makes all the difference.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey. “Don’t stop believing…”
