Crater Lake Peak Weekend

The Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma (MM4MM) Peak Weekends Program!
This program is open to all with a personal connection to multiple myeloma - patients, caregivers, past
MM4MM participants, etc.

Friday, we will leave the hotel at 3:30 p.m. for a short warmup hike to the top of Table Rock. This mesa on the edge of Medford has a fascinating geological and cultural history, as well as terrific views of the surrounding Rogue River Valley and the mountains all around. Table Rock is owned by the Nature Conservancy, which works with a local Native American tribe to preserve native wildflowers and grasses. This hike is a little over 5 miles, gaining about 800 feet of elevation, and we will time our hike to enjoy some sunset colors before heading into town for dinner.
Saturday we will leave the hotel at 8 a.m. for a nearly two-hour drive to Crater Lake National Park. There, we will start our big hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, the 2,600-mile wonder path which extends from Mexico to Canada and was featured in the Cheryl Strayed novel and film Wild, with Reese Witherspoon.
After two miles on the official PCT, we will follow an alternate section steeply up for two miles to the rim, revealing for the first time magnificent Crater Lake — six miles wide and the deepest lake in America. From here, our path meanders six miles along the rim, with hardly any up and down, each turn in the trail revealing a new view of the lake. Along the way we have the option of climbing half a mile to the lookout atop The Watchman, the highest point on the rim at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level.
After our hike, we will have a little time to explore the Rim Village, perhaps hitting the Crater Lake Lodge for a drink or the gift shop for some souvenirs, then head back into Medford for a celebratory dinner.
