Climbing Fuji for Multiple Myeloma

Brian Berryman

Brian Berryman

Dear Sweet Friends and Family,

I pray for a happy and healthy 2017. This year marks 20 years since my mother Mary Frances Berryman (aka Mama) died from complications due to Multiple Myeloma. To honor her, I will be participating in the Moving Mountains for Multiple Myeloma program in July by climbing Mount Fuji to raise funds and awareness for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). Please help me. Again. Yeah again.

Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan at 12,389 feet above sea level. I have committed to raise at least $5,000 for the MMRF. This climb is a huge challenge, nothing compared to the challenges faced by patients and their loved ones dealing with multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and its incidence is increasing with over 30,000 new cases diagnosed in the US this year. Although it is incurable, people are living longer and better with this disease. However, over 12,000 people in the US will die this year. So, we need to continue the fight. Work harder.

As a result of the MMRF, the world's leading private funder of multiple myeloma research, the FDA has approved TEN new treatments, including FOUR in just the past 18 months – a track record that's unparalleled in the world of oncology. These drugs have tripled the lifespan of myeloma patients after diagnosis. And now the MMRF is funding over 20 additional treatments in various stages of development, giving hope to tens of thousands of patients and their families.

The MMRF is one of the most highly regarded cancer foundations in the world. An outstanding 90% of the total MMRF budget goes directly towards research and related programming. And the MMRF is in the top 1% of all charities, having earned Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating for the past eleven years in a row.

Please support my participation today in the Mount Fuji Trek benefiting the MMRF. God Bless You.
